Who Are You?
Do your customers know who you are? Or do they have a perception of who you are? Though perceptions can be completely wrong, they are still as powerful as the reality and that is what is really dangerous!
A perception is what people really THINK is reality. You may be a real nice guy but if two people tell a third you are a miserable human being, that third person’s perception is that you really are a miserable human being!
Fair? No!
Problem? Most definately!
In business perception is equally important because you rely on your customers coming back again and again to purchase products and services from you. If somehow the wrong perception gets around about you and your business, then you could be in trouble.
Perceptions develop because someone thought they were treated poorly or fabulously and told others. If the story is positive then it is a great thing. But if someone had unreasonable demands or expectations that were not fulfilled, then it could turn into a nightmare.
How do you del with perception problems? The most effective way is to provide the very best customer experience possible so when someone does attempt to spread wrong information they are immediately dismissed because there is an overwhelming amount of positive things being said and experienced by your customers. When there is a lot of positive things said about you or your business, bad experiences are discounted if not outright dismissed.
Keep in mind that without the positive experiences in play you are aqt the mercy of anyone who wishes to bad mouth you or your business. That is why establsihed businesses with a long track record of customer service and good business can more easily survive these attempts than the new businessman.
So, moving forward, take every step possible to create the very best customer experience. Just like in sports, sometimes the very best offense is a good defense!
